In 1978 following Imam Khomeini message on escape of soldiers from garrisons, together with his brother he fled military service and joined revolutionary forces.[3]
After victory of the Islamic Revolution, Hossein Kharrazi became member of Isfahan Urban Defense Committee which after a while turned into the IRGC, and due to familiarity with military equipment, became responsible for the armory of this committee. In autumn 1979, to fight counter-revolution with 120 members of Isfahan Province IRGC, he went to Gonbad-e Kavus and Bandar Torkaman but did not accept command of Isfahan forces in this mission and participated as squad commander in clearing Gonbad city. In this position he played role in liberation and clearing of Kurdistan cities such as Divandarreh, Saqqez, Baneh, Marivan and Sardasht.[4]
With the beginning of the Imposed War, he came to southern fronts and by Seyyed Yahya (Rahim) Safavi (commander of IRGC southern operations headquarters),[5] from the second half of February 1981, became commander of Darkhovin operational region. Kharrazi forces in a few months succeeded with 3 companies to break positions of Iraqi armored division east of Ahvaz-Abadan road which played effective role in political and military trend of that period of war. Simultaneously with this operation, on 11 June 1981, Imam Khomeini dismissed Seyyed Abolhassan Banisadr from commander-in-chief and this operation was named Commander-in-Chief Khomeini Rouh-e Khoda.[6] With this operation, the main core of Imam Hussein (PBUH) Brigade was formed and after Samen al-Aemmeh (PBUH) Operation and breaking siege of Abadan, in December 1981, Imam Hussein (PBUH) Brigade was formed using war booties obtained from enemy, and Hossein Kharrazi became its commander.[7] In continuation, Hossein Kharrazi and his forces, in the form of Imam Hussein (PBUH) Brigade, participated in Tariq al-Quds,[8] Mowla al-Mottaqin (PBUH),[9] Fath al-Mobin,[10] Beit al-Moqaddas,[11] Ramadan,[12] Moharram,[13] Valfajr Preliminary,[14] Valfajr 1,[15] Valfajr 2,[16] Valfajr 4,[17] Kheibar,[18] Badr,[19] Valfajr 8,[20] Karbala 3,[21] Karbala 4,[22] and Karbala 5[23] operations.
Kharrazi married in 1985, resulting in a son named Mehdi.[24]
Kharrazi right hand was cut off during Kheibar Operation,[25] but after a while returned to fronts and took command of Isfahan forces which simultaneously with Moharram Operation had been upgraded to division.[26]

In part of the martyr will it is stated: From all strata of nation... I request that considering success of Islam and revolution and country, be more patient and note that it is in difficulties that humans are tested. Do not do, God forbid that day, that you have no answer to give before martyrs and their honorable families.[29]
Ayatollah Khamenei (President) in a message on martyrdom of Hossein Kharrazi considered the fate of martyr Kharrazi a shining page of nation history who during six years of war had conquered peaks of honor and dignity and now had reached the high peak of martyrdom.[30]
After martyrdom of Hossein Kharrazi, Seyyed Morteza Avini (martyr) dedicated the fourteenth part of the third series of Revayat-e Fath documentary titled Alamdar to martyr Kharrazi.
